Graduating from UCSC and walking the College Eight Commencement Ceremony is a multi-part process. Listed below are the two major steps that all students who wish to participate in the C8 Ceremony need to take.         Step 1 – Announce your Intent to Graduate from UCSC

To graduate from UCSC, you must apply to graduate at the Registrar's Office, or at their webpage.

Commencement Rehearsal

Friday, June 10, 5:30-6:45 PM.

A brief Commencement Rehearsal will be held on Friday, June 10, at the College Eight Plaza. We will walk through the ceremony procedures and answer any last-minute questions. All those walking in the ceremony are expected to attend.

Announcements & Caps/Gowns

Order Announcements, Caps & Gowns and other items at the Bay Tree Bookstore Graduation Center beginning Tuesday, April 12 through Friday, June 3. You may order many items at the UCSC Baytree Bookstore’s website: http://slugstore.ucsc.edu/. You are strongly advised to order your Announcements at least five weeks ahead of graduation to receive them on time.

Caps and gowns are strongly encouraged for the Commencement Ceremony. Although there is an option to rent or buy a baccalaureate hood, College Eight will not be “hooding” graduates during the ceremony. * Discounts available for diploma frames when ordering announcements between 4-12-11 to 4-15-11.

Cap & Gown distribution will start on June 6 - 10, 2011 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM and Saturday, June 11 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM. Order your Cap and gown ahead of time through the Bookstore’s Graduation Center.

The Graduation Pledge of Social and Environmental Responsibility

“I pledge to explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job I consider and will try to improve these aspects of any organizations for which I work.”

Be part of a national student movement by taking a voluntary personal pledge for social and environmental responsibility! The Graduation Pledge Alliance (GPA) is a national organization founded in 1987 by students at Humboldt State University. Students define for themselves what it means to be socially and environmentally responsible. The purpose of the pledge is not to limit or restrict our employment options, but rather to remind us of the importance of every decision we make and of the opportunities for proactive involvement that exist in all aspects of our daily schedules.

Disability Accessibility

College Eight is committed to making the ceremony accessible to all participants, families and guests. Disability vans/shuttles will be available throughout the day for transportation assistance between the parking lots and ceremony site. For accommodation requests, separate from the use of disability vans/shuttles, please contact the College Eight Office at 831-459-2361.

Parking and On-Campus Transportation

During Commencement weekend, with ten colleges hosting ceremonies, parking will be very limited and traffic heavy. Each registered senior will receive only two (2) parking passes for the day. Passes will be mailed to each registered senior’s local address in late May. We recommend that you plan to carpool, shuttle, use public transportation, and most of all, plan ahead.

Parking passes must be placed on the dashboard of the vehicle, visible to staff directing traffic and parking. Follow the "West Side Ceremonies" and "College Eight" signs. Parking officials will direct cars to the appropriate lots. Guests may walk or take shuttles to the ceremony site at the Lower West Field.

In her writing and public presentations, Osprey Orielle Lake draws upon her life's work dedicated to environmental protection and cultural transformation as well as her collaboration with organizations around the world that are working to create a just and sustainable future. She insightfully weaves together history, ecology, culture, governance, women’s leadership and the arts to map out an integrated approach to working in partnership with nature. Using an elegant balance of artful narrative and considerable research, Osprey describes how a reconnection with nature in contemporary society can transform our human perspective, providing a solution-oriented and hopeful guide to change in this time of environmental and societal peril and promise.

About Osprey Orielle Lake: Author, Artist, Activist

Osprey Orielle Lake, MA is a lifelong advocate of environmental justice and societal transformation. She is the Director of the Women’s Earth and Climate Caucus, on the Board of Praxis Peace Institute and an advisor to the International Eco-Cities Standards initiative. Osprey has traveled to five continents studying ancient and modern cultures while making presentations at international conferences and universities. She is the Founder/Artist of the International Cheemah Monument Project, creating 18 foot bronze sculpture monuments for locations around the world, where people can ponder a better future for the earth and humanity. Osprey’s unique perspectives as a renowned international sculptor and public speaker on environmental issues have been featured on both national and European television and radio. Earth Week 2011 Kick Off

Please come join us for this fun and informational kickoff to Earth Week 2011. We will be featuring info tables from various campus and community organizations. The Program in Community and Agroecology will be selling farm fresh produce at their Market Cart. OPERS will have their famous rock wall with free rock climbing and prizes. There will also be a hydration station educating participants about the benefit of reusable water bottles while encouraging folks not to use disposable single use water bottles. Come have fun and learn about all of the other Earth Week activities.

Education for Sustainable Living Speaker Series – (Open to the Public)

Dr. Richard A. Oppenlander & Tim Galarneau: Food Systems

Time: 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM   -   Location: UCSC Classroom Unit 2

Dr. Richard  A. Oppenlander, Author of “Comfortably Unaware: Global Depletion and Food Choice Responsibility,” Dr. Oppenlander is a sustainability advocate, writer, and speaker committed to improving the health of our planet. Through literary work or in person, he brings an eclectic combination of experiences regarding this topic spanning the past 40 years. Since the early 1970's, Dr. Oppenlander has extensively studied the effect our food choices have on our health and the immense impact those choices have on our environment. He is president and founder of an organic vegan food production and education business, and has given hundreds of lectures, presentations, and open discussions on the topic of food choice. He has been a featured guest appearing on radio shows, in newspapers and magazines. With "Comfortably Unaware" as well as with his speaking engagements, Dr. Oppenlander addresses the fact that our current choices of foods are causing Global Depletion-the loss of our land, water, air/atmosphere, food supply, biodiversity, energy resources, and our own health. In compelling fashion, he reveals serious inefficiencies and unsustainable practices in our current food production systems and explores unique solutions. Along the way, Dr. Oppenlander challenges audiences with new insights regarding how this has happened- exposing our cultural, social, educational, governmental, and even media influences.

Tim Galarneau is a past Roots of Change Fellow who works as an education and research program specialist on social issues for the Centerfor Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS) focusing on farm to institution, community food systems, and student education and empowerment.  He also serves as an advisor to campus farm to college efforts as a Board member for the California Student Sustainability Coalition and the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education.  In addition, Tim is a co-founder of the Real Food Challenge that is working to shift over $1 billion in annual food procurement and consumption in colleges and universities in the United States by 2020 toward greater sustainability.  Most recently, Tim is part of a diverse network of young leaders across the country, known as Live Real, that are creating a new “move-entity” for empowering  youth and vulnerable communities toward changing their food systems

If you've ever wondered about how reliable our energy system is and what California is doing to become more sustainable with its energy supply, come ask your questions to the experts on our panel: Alan Richards (legendary retired UCSC professor of Blood and Oil), Michael Colvin (policy analyst at the California Public Utilities Commission) and more to be confirmed! This is also a great event if you're interested in a career in energy and want to ask the panelists how they made it successfully in this field of work!

The Japanese Nuclear Disaster: Impacts & Implications – (Open to the Public)

UCSC Baytree Bookstore, Sustainability Section for Earth Week

The Student Environmental Center and Education for Sustainable Living Program have partnered with the Baytree Bookstore to set up a section in the bookstore and a roundtable area to promote books on the topic areas of sustainability for our campus systems and community.  Please stop by and see the choices- some of which will be part of the Monday Night Speaker Series during spring quarter in Classroom Unit 2.  Stay tuned for the list of authors that will be available for books signings and other related events!

UCSC Dining Director “Goes Vegan” in April!

In an effort to evaluate the health benefits of reducing the amount of animal protein in his diet and to objectively look at the true range of vegetarian and vegan options in the UCSC Dining Halls and campus run cafes, UCSC Dining Director is “going Vegan “ for the month of April.

Slugs go Green!

Slugs Go GREEN! is a week long outdoor tabling activity at the Colleges Nine and Ten Quad (located just outside the Dining Hall). We will have Earth Day quizzes, button making as well as information about the Local Foods Showcase on Thursday April 21, 2011 at the Colleges Nine and Ten MPR.

Earth Week 2012: Finding Room to Bloom

Monday, April 16th – Sunday, April 22nd

What is Earth Week?

Earth Week is a campus-wide event dedicated to engaging in dialogue, education, and action for the sake of sustainability. By shedding light on sustainability efforts in our community, Earth Week hopes to inspire participants to better understand and develop their relationship to the environment and to give participants the means to lead more conscientious, more planet-friendly lives.

Throughout the week, there will be a variety of sustainability-related events and activities hosted around the UCSC campus. Various campus groups will host hikes, workshops, special meals, discussion groups, as well as special lectures and workshops that focus on Finding Room to Bloom in all facets of life as a citizen of the environment.

What does "Finding Room to Bloom" mean?

Building off of the 2012 Earth Summit theme, “SPROUT,” Earth Week’s theme, Finding Room to Bloom, is about helping our community to flourish through conscientious action. It’s about finding space in both our personal lives and our communities to make positive sustainable changes, and realizing our power to make them happen!

Earth Day Festival

Earth Day is the culminating event of Earth Week. It unites music, art, environmental awareness and delicious food on a grassy knoll overlooking the Pacific.  This is an all-inclusive event and we encourage all to participate by signing up to host a workshop, table or as an event volunteer (details below).
